Clean Energy Activity Day Educates Sandwich STEM Academy

On May 22, 2018, approximately 750 sixth through eighth grade students participated in Clean Energy Activity Day at the Sandwich STEM Academy in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Kathleen Driscoll, Staff Associate at the Environmental Health & Safety Department of the nearby Massachusetts Maritime Academy, kicked off the day with a presentation to the students about alternative energy sources, clean energy, and the technologies that the Massachusetts Maritime Academy uses. After the presentation in the auditorium, students received Clean Energy Activity Day canvas bags that each included a reusable water bottle.

Wearing Clean Energy Activity Day t-shirts, the students cycled through the gymnasium with their respective grades, stopping at different tables that featured hands-on science activities staffed by clean energy industry representatives and teachers.  They built electrical circuits, learned about wind power, and gained insight in to the clean energy industry. Students enjoyed receiving a stamp for their Clean Energy Activity Day “passports” at each station they visited.

The Clean Energy Activity Day program is open to all Massachusetts private and public elementary and middle schools that have students in kindergarten through eighth grade. MassCEC partners with schools to provide students with this one-day educational event to expose students to clean energy concepts, career pathways, and higher-education options.
