New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center manages the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal.

The New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal is a multi-purpose  facility designed to support the construction, assembly, and deployment of offshore wind projects, as well as handle bulk, break-bulk, container shipping and large specialty marine cargo.  The first of its kind in North America, the terminal has been engineered to sustain mobile crane and storage loads that rival the highest load-bearing ports in the nation.

The terminal offers 1,200 linear feet of bulkhead, including 800 feet of deep-draft berthing and 400 feet of barge berthing space, 29-foot controlling depth in the New Bedford Harbor (MLLW), and 26 acres of terminal storage.  Additionally, the majority of the terminal, including along the bulkhead, can support 4,100 pounds per square foot of uniform loading and crane loads of up to 20,485 pounds per square foot.

The terminal is located at 4 Wright Street, New Bedford, MA 02740.

Marine Commerce Terminal’s Environmental Benefits

The construction of the terminal resulted in a significant environmental benefit to the City of New Bedford, as large quantities of contaminated material left over from industrial waste generated during the 1930s and 1940s was cleaned up.  A total of 280,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment was dredged from the harbor, and a total of 18,000 tons of contaminated soil from the terminal site was disposed of in EPA-approved facilities.
