Getting Started
If you are considering installing a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) project and haven’t identified a firm to design and install the system, MassCEC recommends working with a manufacturer's representative based on the kind of equipment you intend to install. Regional manufacturer's representatives are listed below. MassCEC also recommends asking designers and installers the questions listed below.

Plan and spec versus Design-build
Plan and Spec or “design/bid/build” projects use an architect or engineer to prepare the building plans and specifications. A solicitation is then issued requesting contractor proposals. Each interested contractor reviews the plans and specifications and may opt to submit a bid. The building owner selects a winning bidder based on price, qualifications, or other factors.
Design-Build projects are typically smaller jobs or retrofits where the building owner opts to forgo the bidding process and instead selects a single contractor to complete all design and engineering work on the building. For VRF projects, designers are often manufacturer or distributor representatives with extensive experience designing this type of system.
Suggestions for Finding a Variable Refrigerant Flow Designer or Installer
Before hiring a designer or installer for your VRF system, it's important to ensure they have the necessary skills and expertise to help you find the best product for your specific site. Consider getting multiple quotes for your project. Below are some questions you may want to ask an installer you are considering working with.
Experience
- Have you participated in manufacturer training for the systems you would install? (MassCEC recommends 8 hours of manufacturer training for a designer and 16 hours of manufacturer training for an installer)
- Can you provide references from previous customers with similar systems?
Installation Process
- When would you be able to perform the installation and how long will it take to complete?
- Will you hire subcontractors to complete portions of the project? If so, what firms and what will they do?
- Will you provide some training for our building's staff on how to properly operate and maintain the system?
- Do you provide a warranty for the systems you install?
