State energy officials are available and willing to provide guidance and support to communities looking to incorporate renewables into their energy portfolio. There are plenty of options to choose from – including wind energy, hydropower and solar electricity – and the information below will help you get started. The links below provide information on energy efficiency, renewable energy and clean transportation options available to communities in Massachusetts, from MassCEC and beyond. 

The state Department of Energy Resources (DOER)'s Green Communities Division and federal Department of Energy offer many programs for communities that are looking to incorporate renewable and efficient energy into their energy portfolios. 

Clean Heating and Cooling

MassCEC offers grants to non-profit businesses and government entities for eligible Clean Heating and Cooling projects in the Commonwealth, including ground-source heat pumps and solar hot water. These technologies can help businesses save money on heating and cooling bills, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and maintaining a high level of comfort and reliability.

Solar Electricity

Solar electricity can save Massachusetts municipalities money on their energy bills through reduced electric costs.

Innovation at Wastewater Treatment Plants

MassCEC provides grants of up to $150,000 to publicly-owned wastewater treatment plants that pilot new, innovative technologies aimed at one the three focus areas: (1) increasing energy efficiency, (2) recovering resources for reuse, or (3) removing nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorous.

Hydropower Projects

MassCEC's Hydropower program provides grants to non-profit, businesses and government entities for eligible projects to upgrade their hydroelectric systems.

Organics-to-Energy

Organics-to-Energy projects transform certain types of waste – including food, animal waste and yard waste – into renewable electricity or heat. MassCEC's Organics-to-Energy program provides funding for eligible projects from interested businesses or government entities in Massachusetts.

Commonwealth Wind

MassCEC's Commonwealth Wind Program assists government and non-profit organizations in Massachusetts that are interested in wind energy development, by providing grant funding and technical assistance.

Clean Cities Coalition and Alternative Transportation

The Massachusetts Clean Cities Coalition is part of a larger initative spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The purpose is to reduce petroleum consumption by vehicles in the Commonwealth and to make necessary changes to infrastructure so Alternative-Fueled Vehicles can become a viable transporation option.

Green Communities

Leading By Example works with the Massachusetts state government to set targets for facilities in regards to greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, water conservation and renewable energy.
