Now in its 4th year, the MIT EnergyHack brings opportunities for learning, problem solving, and networking to the forefront as teams develop rapid, innovative solutions to the problems in energy that our society faces today.

With challenges written for a myriad of fields within the energy industry, and with our participants specializing across so many different disciplines, there is great opportunity for students and sponsors alike to apply their skills and learn something new.

In brief, participants will be presented with challenges form companies in the energy industry on November 2nd and break out into teams. Those teams will then have until Sunday morning to hack the challenge they’ve been assigned and present their solution to company representatives, fellow hackers, and judges. The presentations will be in the form of a short PowerPoint presentation. The judges will rank solutions and presentations and winning teams will receive prizes in various categories.

Welcome to MassCEC’s Quarterly Funding Opportunities Update webinar for startups and innovation ecosystem partners! On this webinar, MassCEC staff will give a rundown of some of the grant and other funding opportunities available to cleantech startups and innovators in Massachusetts. Each webinar will highlight open solicitations for funding from MassCEC and other funding agencies as appropriate. The webinar will cover the application process and timeline of each program as well as the programs’ goals and who should apply. Questions are welcome! 

The Fall 2018 webinar will discuss MassCEC’s InnovateMass program as well as the DeployMass program. 

InnovateMass is a demonstration project grant of up to $250,000, aimed at cleantech companies in Massachusetts. This round of InnovateMass also includes a Grid Modernization spotlight! DeployMass facilitates the adoption of clean energy technologies by public or public-interest customers to support the growth and development of Massachusetts-based companies while providing broader public benefits. Americans’ Changing Views of Renewable Energy Policies Webinar

For ten years, the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College have conducted the National Surveys on Energy and Environment (NSEE), which explore Americans’ attitudes towards energy and climate change. The researchers recently published Solar, Wind, and State Mandates: 10 Years of Renewable Energy in the NSEE, which considers how Americans’ views on solar and wind energy have changed over the past decade. The report also explores attitudes towards and knowledge of state energy mandates, such as renewable portfolio standards. Lead author Sarah Mills will discuss the report’s findings and also reveal the results of a new 2018 survey, which will be released in November.

Utility Resilience: Lessons from Puerto Rico and Local Preparation

Adapting utilities to be resilient to climate impacts, from extreme storm events to heatwaves, poses significant challenges and opportunities for providers and communities. Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017 and resulted in the longest blackout in U.S. History. The Forum welcomes Malu Blázquez Arsuaga, the Executive Director of the Resilient Puerto Rico Advisory Commission, and speakers from Resilient Power Puerto Rico to discuss lessons learned from Hurricane Maria and rebuilding resilient utility infrastructure.

The focus will then turn to local climate impacts and hear what steps are being taken for regional utility resilience. Local utility providers and communities will discuss on-going projects and challenges for climate adaptation in New England.
