A “tiny house” has been constructed by high school students on the grounds of Malden High School through MassCEC’s Learn and Earn program. Intended as a vehicle for students to acquire experience in STEM and clean energy related fields at a younger age, the Learn and Earn program was launched in the summer of 2014 and more than 140 students have participated to date. A group of 20 Malden students applied for the $160,000 grant for the 2016-2017 school year. Throughout the year, students have been working a paid 25-hour work week to construct the 8’ x 10’ house, in addition to completing coursework on environmental science, clean energy careers, and construction. The house will be fitted with solar panels will act as an interactive classroom for future students to study clean energy generation. Additionally, students were able to visit various worksites and participate in learning and training opportunities with organizations including the City of Malden Building Department, Tufts University, and Tesla. As part of the Tesla partnership, students received a tour of one of Tesla’s solar warehouses, attended a green career seminar with Tesla employees, and participated in a Tesla Model S Experience.
Due to the success of the Malden Tiny House program, MassCEC renewed Malden High School's grant for the 2017-2018 school year.
