The new Scott’s Grove neighborhood in West Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard, includes nine affordable, year-round rental apartments and is home to twenty-one residents. The development was built by Island Housing Trust, a non-profit organization on Martha’s Vineyard dedicated to creating affordable housing solutions that blend harmoniously with existing neighborhoods, minimize the impact on the land, and offer residents low heating and cooling costs.
Island Housing Trust worked with Rusty’s Inc. of West Yarmouth to install a total of nine air-source heat pumps at the Scott’s Grove project (one per apartment). The apartments are heated and cooled solely with the air-source heat pump systems. MassCEC provided the Island Housing trust with rebates for each of the air-source heat pump systems. New construction projects, such as Scott’s Grove, offer a unique opportunity to design and build homes that do not rely on fossil fuels. According to Philippe Jordi, Executive Director of Island Housing Trust, they exclusively use air-source heat pumps in their new construction and renovation projects to complement their high performance, super insulated, and air tight buildings.
