Anaerobic Digestion Facility

In 2015 The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center awarded a $400,000 grant to the Stop & Shop Distribution Center facility in Freetown for construction of an anaerobic digestion facility. Since coming online in February 2016, the newly dubbed Green Energy Facility has consistently exceeded its target daily volume intake. To date, more than 33,000 tons of food waste have been diverted and processed by this organics-to-energy facility. More than 8,000 MW of energy have been produced from the organic material, and nearly 1,750 tons of digestate have been produced for soil amendment.
