XL Hybrids, based in Brighton, MA, was founded in 2009 by alumni from MIT right here in the heart of Massachusetts. The company specializes in the electrification of commercial fleet vehicles such as trucks and vans.
Thanks to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s DeployMass Program, which seeks to introduce innovative clean energy and water technologies to the marketplace, XL Hybrids can now add the State of Massachusetts to its list of customers alongside other high-profile names such as The Coca-Cola Company, FedEx, and PepsiCo.
MassCEC's award of $160,000 enabled the company to buy down the product and installation costs of its hybrid vehicle retrofit system for 27 vehicles used by the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The use of XL Hybrid’s technology will reduce vehicle fuel consumption and help the two state organizations save on operating costs. Additionally, these vehicles provide a 25% increase in miles driven per gallon, which reduces energy costs for the Commonwealth and saves taxpayer dollars. The technology also measures performance in order to help users meet sustainability goals.
This project will serve as a pilot model for Massachusetts state agencies, demonstrating the various benefits that come with fleet electrification.
